Longtime player and staff member Duwaine Jenkins Jr. was named USTA Middle States High School Coach of the Year for the Philadelphia Area Tennis District.
At the ceremony held at Germantown Cricket Club, where LEGACY will host it’s annual LEGACY on the Lawn in August, Duwaine was joined by his son DC, fellow winner Val McPeak, and Emily, a former player at McPeak’s Little Flower High School and a Community Tennis Summer Camp instructor.
Duwaine “coaches the coaches” as he says for the Philadelphia Public League and is PIAA DXII Chairman. He also teaches Health & PE at John Bertram High School.
Duwaine has been with LEGACY for over 4 decades, first as a player and then as a coach and now as an Area Manager. Duwaine’s kids also have played and worked throughout the program – a true LEGACY family!
This is an excerpt from the awards ceremony.
Duwaine Jenkins Jr. has shown decades of leadership and dedication to tennis in Philadelphia. Duwaine serves as Chair of Tennis for the Philadelphia Public League, started his high school coaches career at John Bartram High School and is an Area Manager for LEGACY’s Community Tennis Summer Camps. In each of these roles, he has been a driving force in sustaining and growing tennis across the city. Whether organizing league play for his kids, supporting additional coaches, or expanding access to tennis in neighborhoods across the city, Duwaine’s impact has been felt by generations of players inside and outside of his school. His commitment to the game and to the young people he serves makes him a true pillar of the Philadelphia Area Tennis District, and someone we can truly depend on here in Middle States.
