Last month, students from all 4 schools in LEGACY’s Champions on the Rise afterschool programs celebrate Black History Month through projects highlighting prominent black figures including civil rights activists, athletes, artists and more!
At McClure, students learned about the life and legacy of Arthur Ashe, his impact on tennis, his activism against racial injustice and his work in the AIDS community. Students talked with staff about Ashe and asked questions about his life.
At Richard Wright Elementary, students learned about historic black figures including the impact of Martin Luther King Jr. and Richard R. Wright himself who was born into slavery but became a military officer, educator and college president, politician, civil rights advocate.
To close out the month, two schools hosted special events to celebrate the projects students had been working on all month long.
At Pennell, students participated in a “Blax & Wax” event, where they paired up to research and present on prominent Black figures who inspire them. Featured figures included Langston Hughes, Harriet Tubman, Beyoncé, Michael B. Jordan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson.
At Overbrook Educational Center, students brought their learning to life through a “Journey Through Black History” Showcase. The event featured student-led performances in dance, singing, acting, and visual art. Every project was created and led by students, highlighting their creativity and dedication. Dozens of families came out to support, enjoy the performances, share a meal, and celebrate together as a community.
